THE VEADO BRAVO OF RIO DE JANEIRO is a performance created by the duo Marie Hego, visual artist, and Cayo Almeida, dancer and choreographer.
The artists seek to re-signify the word «viado» and understand the process of repairing the man’s inner conflict as a way to break through the model of masculinity imposed by Brazilian society.
Initially used during the military dictatorship to stigmatize homosexual men, viado is an abbreviation of transviado, «deviated from normality». It also refers to the animal veado, «deer», - from the Latin venātu, «hunted game.» Today, the LGBTQIA+ community has reclaimed the term as the personification of an identity and worldview.
The Veado Bravo of Rio de Janeiro celebrates the rebirth of a renewed masculinity, unique and personal. An invitation for men to embrace their own authenticity and create spaces of belonging in which they recognize themselves.
